Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap
This recipe is low “sudsing” so it works for either a front loading or a top load machine.
4 Cups – hot tap water
1 bar Ivory Soap- Grated (I use my food processor) or you can use “Fels Naptha” brand soap which works very well, but has a strong smell and I prefer a natural soap or the Ivory. Don’t use a glycerin based soap, it separates too much.
1 Cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax
Start boiling 4 cups hot water in a pan.
Once the water has boiled, reduce to medium heat and add one bar of grated soap.
Stir until melted over med/low heat.
When soap is completely dissolved, add 1 cup Arm and Hammer Washing Soda and 1/2 C. of Borax and stir until they are completely dissolved.
I have saved my old laundry detergent containers (around 1 and 1/2 gallons) and re-labelled them so it is easy to shake up and then pour the soap.
I split the amount of concentrate and pour it evenly into the containers, then fill each container to the top with water from the tap. The concentrate measures about 2 to 2 1/2 cups per container.
Close your lid and allow it to gel for about 24 hours ~ Use the cap from an old laundry container to measure one cap full per large load of laundry. You should use the same amount of this soap as you use when you do a load using detergent.
You will need to shake or stir this before using it, as it is sure to separate. The recipe makes 2 and 1/2 to 3 gallons total. Depending on how much you use per load and your water hardness, you will be likely to get around 120 large loads of laundry done before you mix up another batch.
I tried a couple of different versions of this soap before I found the combination that I liked.
