Charlotte Mason Inspiration

Charlotte Mason was a writer/educator who wrote books, curriculum and established schools in the UK to teach her philosophy and methods of instruction to teachers (the House of Education in Ambleside, England and the Parent’s Union School).

From the “Simply Charlotte Mason” website:

What is the Charlotte Mason Method?

A method of education popular with homeschoolers in which children are taught as whole persons through a wide range of interesting living books, firsthand experiences, and good habits.

Charlotte Mason was a British educator who lived in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Her method, the Charlotte Mason method, is centered around the idea that education is three-pronged: Education is an Atmosphere, a Discipline, a Life.

We personally implement these ideas and methods in our home education program in various ways. Homeschool families who use Charlotte Mason’s ideas may use them in different ways and in varying degrees.
1) We focus on creating good habits both in life and in our studies.
2) We use Narration (both written and verbal), Mastery, the Socratic method and other non-test oriented means of assessment  except for NC’s required yearly standardized testing.
3) We choose lively, quality books on the topics that we wish to study rather than making a textbook our core.
4) We emphasize nature and include the arts in our regular studies every year.
5) We create a learning atmosphere in our home and actively seek inviting environments in which to learn outside of our home.
6) We know that the student is ultimately responsible for their own learning and when the student is invested and interested in their education, learning will take a place of pre-eminence.
7) We integrate our subjects and include learning by “doing”  by encouraging our kids to take on projects and electives that interest them.
8) We involve ourselves in our community and in serving others around us.
9) We expect our teenagers to behave like the young adults they are and we treat each other with mutual respect. (most of the time :)
10) We help them to think for themselves and explore ideas and values that are different from ours so that they can understand and affect the culture around them in a positive way.
11) We teach them to respect and value everyone as an individual created by God.
12) We know that life is about learning and that learning happens all the time!
Through our years of Homeschooling, we have found the Ambleside Online (AO/ Elementary Years) and  House of Education (HEO/ Middle School- High School) curriculum recommendations to be very helpful in tailoring our student’s literature based program to them as individuals.
I have substituted different subjects and modern “Living Books” where I felt that another choice would be better, but the AO curriculum gives a ton of good information and book lists that can get you started if you want to check it out.
If you are interested in a curriculum that is already put together for you, you might want to visit Charlotte Mason High School.  Jim and Sheila Carroll (Living Books Curriculum for K-8th Grades) have a guide that helps you with recommended resources, organizational and time management tips in addition to tips on creating your transcripts and assigning credits.
Charlotte Mason Help is another website with a lot of good information, resources and good ideas for using HEO and Charlotte Mason’s ideas.
I hope that you find this page informative and interesting!
